It's rod and gun talk at the World Travel Market at Excel in London. |

The chap in the wolf-skin outfit is from Siberia, promoting their Lodge there where it is all to do with fish and game. He had his lap-top primed, and showed a group of men from Ukraine, each cradling enormous salmonoid fish that had to cause enormous strain on their arms. One of course need not spend too much time feeling sorry for them, under the circumstances. |

We were delighted to encounter Connie Campbell, back in London again, representing New Orleans, and Jody Hanson, London based. There's talk in the air about a return visit to New Orleans, and maybe some fishing in Cajun-land, with some cooking instructions to go with it. Doing it the Cajun way, they say, can make anything taste good. More good news: the Mississippi will be seeing back an old friend - The Steamboat American Queen. |

It was good to see Sally Sedky again, representing Bahrain, looking dignified in her traditional outfit. The fishing there seems to be pretty good, and we hope to pursue this further in due course. It would be nice to spend a week there in January, fly fishing in the sea, and fending off the sun. Turkey offers an opportunity for wild boar, and quail, which in Europe, are migratory, unlike the American species. Finland has developed a really productive and rewarding sea trout programme, insuring that the fish are there - always. |

There were chaps carving things out of wood - I was wondering if they would do me a “Last Supper.” I suppose that's a lot of wood carving, what with their being 12 disciples. |

The Chap from Hungary, where they have a lot of good hunting, including wild boar, was cooking up mini-lunches for one and all. It was in Hungary, some years ago that I scored a double with driven pheasants in the snow. It probably wasn't such a mean feat, considering how thick the birds were on the ground - sorry, I meant “In the air.” It was here where we had the best wild boar we had ever eaten, at a specialist game restaurant high up in the hills overlooking the Danube. |

Food-wise, at the Travel Market, the Muslim lands offer great hospitality, providing samples of their native fare in their beautifully constructed edifices. Combined, they are the epitome of peace and togetherness. Their representatives are cordial and polite, pleased that you have come to see them. It is obviously a better world here, inside the confines of the World Travel Market, then the one outside in the “real” world. |
