WELCOME TO ISSUE
NUMBER 45

Welcome to our 45th Edition. We are now entering our 12th year. We are delighted to be back with you again. It is our pleasure and our privilege to make this Journal our contribution to the sporting scene. It is, of course, free, and always will be. Our world is a magnificent one, replete with the rewards of a sometimes generous countryside. We know defeat. And we know victory there, and how profoundly satisfying that victory can be. We are grateful to our readers for their support, and their kind words.

DAVID

'Wildlife photographer David Steinberg and wife Annie in Union Square, San Francisco, planning their next trip – to the Solomon Islands this time.'

Meanwhile, here are some of his photos closer to home, in Montana USA.

David arrived home the other day, to find that a deer was occupying his parking place.

THE CLA GAME FAIR 2011

The Game Fair – how much we look forward to it. It never disappoints. We talk about what we want to see, and whom we want to see. And what we want to buy. I'll have to get over to the Fishing Republic – Lure Flash. There was a particular brown nymph, not so different from a damsel, that was a sensation. The fish were being very selective – but they couldn't keep off this brown nymph. Too bad I left it in a tree on the bank side. Next time I'll buy two.

Let's go over to the Eyebrook stand, and speak with Andy Miller and Chief Warden Dawn, and hear how the fishing has been at Eyebrook. Good, will be the answer. It always is. Andy wouldn't have it any other way.

Let's drop in on Viking Arms – Sam – Samantha MacArthur, the managing director, has created an enormous catalogue, filled with all the things you need most. We have written about their historical arms, weapons that made history – and changed it.

'Learning to tie flies at the Game Fair'

'Selecting tackle at the Game Fair'

'Mike Yardley giving tuition to a passer-by.'

DEL WALTERS

With Rifle in Hand, We Go Forward, Filled with Hope….

I look forward to stalking with Del Walters. Here is the information he sent me. I shall be reporting events in the Journal.

The web page is  www.roefalldeermanagement.co.uk

The deer management show is relatively young, only been active on its own for the last 12 years as I was working { ghillie ing } for some 10 years previously with South Wales Deer Services under my stalking mentor who is Mr Nigel Davies formerly Head Ranger at Margam Park. Through his connections I then went on to do work in the Gloucestershire / Wiltshire and Oxfordshire areas gleaning as much knowledge as I could on the species I hadn't worked with.

I have spent considerable time in Scotland working with the Reds, Sika and Roe. The only species that I don't have access to is Chinese Water Deer to date, but as the areas that I'm invited to manage grow that could only be a matter of time although I have successfully hunted them.

The areas we cover at the moment are Wiltshire / Hampshire / Gloucestershire/ Oxfordshire / Dorset / West Sussex. There are some other areas to add but at a later date possibly.

The day rate is £135 for 2 x 3 hour sessions; if a rifle is needed there is a charge of £25 per day.

The only other requirement is that the visiting gun, other than adhering to best practices, that they enjoy the day as with everything we are dealing with wild animals and nothing can be guaranteed other than some Welsh humour given and taken.

Regards

Del.
